Waiting on Baby | Maternity Portraits at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens

When Sara first reached out to me, I was intrigued and thrilled to capture her story.

She told me she was half expecting this baby to come well before her due date because she had given birth to her first daughter at 29 weeks!!

She and her husband were waiting to name baby girl until they saw her in person and she showed them the right name.

What I really loved though, was watching her and Tim parent their firstborn daughter, Joanna. She is very 3! And I loved that they didn’t try to change that. I don’t want to change the behavior of children for photos- in fact, there is almost nothing that will stop me photographing them in their elements- for better or worse. Literally, only if they show a lack of consent to being photographed will I stop shooting because there is absolutely nothing offensive about a child being a human. But if you have read any of my personal blog posts, you know by now, that’s kind of my thing.

Anyway, we met up at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens because Sara told me it was a very special place to Joanna.

I gotta say, I had forgotten how much I love those gardens. It had been about 4 or 5 years since my last visit before going for this session. Even though there is a ton of construction going on there, I am pretty sure it is still one of San Antonio’s most magical gems. We had a blast walking through and looking at the flowers, shooting in the open shade (because their closing time forced me to work outside my element in the height of direct sunlight rather than my preferred golden hour… and we nailed it if I do say so myself!), and playing in their lazy river! While I loved shooting there, I have also used scouting as an excuse to take my kids to enjoy the gardens a few times before and since!
